How many Alexander lessons will I need to take?
My goal is always to help the student solve their issues as quickly as possible. Many notice some difference and relief after even one lesson. However, it can take several sessions in order for the student to internalize the technique, see a real change in their habits, and actively prevent tension themselves--it takes some effort to change deeply ingrained behavior and build positive routines. One factor in this will be the severity of the issue--if someone is coming to me for a little more freedom in performing arts, it may take less time to be effective than if you have chronic pain. Causation is also a factor--the more subtle and long-lasting the habit, the more work will be needed to change it, but often the more benefit comes when it no longer persists. Since this is self-care, my experience is that if a student applies the work consistently between lessons and does their homework, they progress rapidly compared to those who only work while in-lesson. This is a great way to save time, money, and feel better faster. Some students find they stay in lessons after their primary issue has been managed for unexpected benefits or because they enjoy learning about themselves and becoming more present!
